FORTHEM Alliance

The European Universities initiative is a new project supported by the European Commission, which aims to develop and facilitate international mobility by moving beyond the current forms of mobility.

Many universities in Europe have united into alliances so they can set up innovative projects for their students, staff and entire community, through trainings, research and even social engagement.

The University of Burgundy is part of the FORTHEM Alliance (Fostering Outreach within European Regions, Transnational Higher Education and Mobility) with six other universities:

 FORTHEM was created for the students (FOR-THEM). So you are at the heart of the project.

What are our projects and how can students take full advantage of them?

Each year, new Eramus+ agreements are signed between the 7 FORTHEM partners, which allows students to easily build a mobility course within the framework of an Erasmus exchange.

uB students will be able to go on an Erasmus exchange several times within our 6 FORTHEM partner universities with simplified procedures: an easier way of mobility and at all levels of study.

To apply for this mobility, follow the procedures described on the Erasmus+ programme page.

Short study period, all costs covered, in our partner universities

  • Collective short term mobilities: for a few days, you and other students from 6 other countries will participate in a thematic program open to all fields (migration studies, interculturality, Europe...and so on).
  • Individual short term mobilities: you will spend up to 10 days in another FORTHEM partner university to carry out your project (thesis research, work on a common project with other students...and so on).

FORTHEM Campus: spend a semester to study with a group of students from seven countries by taking thematic courses according to the areas of expertise of the host university. These courses, although inspired from a scientific field, are not only made for students in the field, but for a wider student audience.

Summer universities: a thematic course organized throughout a few weeks in partner universities during the summer holidays.

  • Implementation of devices to facilitate the learning of languages of the FORTHEM partner university countries.
  • Creation of linguistic connections with native students from our partner universities.
  • Development of language mediation tools so that everyone can express themselves in their own language while exchanging in real time.
  • Setting up of multiple English courses within each university which will allow you to go on an exchange without necessarily knowing the language of the country.
  • Creation of a European catalog for tutored projects.
  • Setting up of a virtual European campus to take courses abroad without leaving home.
  • ...

  • You can apply for the internships we and our external partners offer. These internships take place in the 7 different FORTHEM regions whether in a laboratory, a private company, an organization... We also offer internships in schools for those who study teaching.
  • You can carry out your own civic engagement project and we will help with the finances - your project must be linked to one of the objectives of the Agenda 2030 of the United Nations (ecology, inequalities, poverty...).
  • We also support student associations to help them develop projects with other FORTHEM partner universities’ associations.
  • You can also become a FORTHEM student ambassador and promote the alliance among other students from your university.
  • We are also setting up a common student card: European Student Card.
  • ...

The FORTHEM Labs are groups of experts that work together on seven different thematic areas in order to find solutions to societal challenges we face:

  • Diversity and Migration,
  • Multilingualism in School and Higher Education,
  • Food Science,
  • Digital Transformation,
  • Climate and Resources,
  • Experiencing Europe,
  • Resilience, Life Quality and Demographic Change.

As a student, you can connect to these working groups through:

  • an internship as part of your studies;
  • a research paper that you are carrying out within your studies and thus will grant you ECTS credits;
  • participation in different events and short term mobilities organized around the Labs themes;
  • ...

All the actions mentioned above will be implemented gradually in the months and years to come.
