HOUSING

It's essential to start looking for accommodation before you arrive in France. It can be difficult to find accommodation, especially at the start of the new academic year, and especially when you're arriving in a city you've never been to before.

Depending on the length of your stay in Burgundy, we recommend that you get in touch with your EURAXESS center to find out about accommodation options and get help with your search.

Regional student centre CROUS

International researchers and PhD students can apply for student housing through the regional student centre CROUS (Centre régional des oeuvres universitaires et scolaires). A variety of residence types are offered: furnished rooms, studios, or apartments.

Rooms and studios are available for one person only and you can rent them for short or long stays. Apartments are available for one or several people and can be rented only for long stays.

To apply for CROUS housing, please log in at:

Private accommodation solutions

You can rent your private accommodation:

The Region of Burgundy-Franche-Comté also provides a list of several housing possibilities on the Logement Bourgogne website (website in French) such as rooms in private homes or shared flats (you have your own room with sometimes a private bathroom but share the rest of the accommodation with the owners or other flatmates).

You can also take a look at the Practical Guide for housing in Burgundy (document in French) in order to find the type of housing which suits you best, as well as other useful information. You will find special websites for rental adverts, a list of private and public residences, advice for renting in France and how to apply for state financial help for housing.

Here are also some links to specialised websites offering:

Hotels and Airbnb

If you are coming for just a short period of time, whether that be a few days or a few weeks, you can rent a hotel room in Dijon, Auxerre, Le Creusot or Nevers.

Formalities

For longer stays, you'll need to take out housing insurance, and have a guarantor in France, either through a private personl living in France who will act as guarantor, or through a national system such as Visale (for people under 30).

Housing insurance

Housing insurance is compulsory for all accommodation (except hotels and tourist accommodation) and must be taken out before you move in, and start on the day you get the keys of your housing. It is possible to take out housing insurance with your bank or with an insurance company of your choice.

Finding a guarantor

The Visale national system is designed to help young people under 30 (up to their 31st birthday) who do not have a guarantor when applying for housing in France. Action Logement (Visale) acts as a guarantor on their behalf. The scheme is completely free of charge, and all procedures are paperless.

You can also check your eligibility for other forms of assistance, such as Loca-Pass or Mobili-Jeune.

For PhD students and researchers aged 31 and more who are unable to find a physical guarantor, it is possible to use moral guarantors such as Garantme and Cautioneo, who offer a paid guarantee service.

Leaving your accommodation

Before leaving your accommodation, whatever the type of accommodation (except tourist accommodation), please check the conditions: notice period, making an appointment for the inventory of fixtures on departure, cancellation of accommodation insurance, etc.
