Language assistants

Teach your native language and help professors in secondary education and universities.

You can work as a language assistant in a high school or university abroad, teaching your native language. It's not necessarily a requirement to have studied languages or education to go abroad as a language assistant; in fact, students of all disciplines are potentially eligible to do this. To find out about the possibilities open to you, get in touch with the appropriate parties in your home country (for example, special government programmes that send language assistants abroad).

Or, you can directly contact the universities and/or high schools that interest you and where you wish to work as a language assistant. To find potential ideas you can take a look at the website Euroguidance or contact the cultural department of the country's embassy, who will be able to provide you with the details for such establishments.

If your level of French is excellent or if French is your native language you could go abroad to teach French as a language assistant in a secondary school, college or partner university.

France Éducation international language assistants programme

How to apply

Applications usually close in February or March for the following academic year.

You must be registered as a student at the University of Burgundy when submitting your application in order to finalise your application. During your year abroad you can register at the university if you wish. This will allow you to keep your student status and French social security, but you are not obliged to register at a French higher education institution.

Good to know: some countries allow you to renew your language assistant contract for another year.

Language assistants at uB's partner universities

Go abroad in the framework of a university cooperation agreement

uB students who have completed their 3rd year of studies, or who are master students, can work as a university language assistant in a partner universitiy in the frame of a cooperation agreement.

There are several agreements which are mainly dedicated to languages and communications students (LLCE anglais, LEA anglais), particularly with American, British and Canadian universities. These agreements allow students to work as a university French language assistant and sometimes also give them the opportunity to take courses within the host university, or even complete a degree.

An informational meeting takes place each November about positions for the following year. The time and place for this meeting is always posted in advance on the English department's bulletin board.

To find out more about the application procedure and your English-speaking contacts at uB contact the teachers of the English Department at UFR Languages and Communication:
